Sabumarimon Kaitei Kara no Dasshutsu - Submarimon's Escape from the Bottom of the Sea
20,000 Digi-Leagues under the Sea

Crystal's Notes: Awesome! My first comparison! I watched the dub of Digimon when it was new, then I discovered this site a few years ago. When the wonderful site known as Youtube came along, that gave me more access to the Japanese version! It feels kinda weird DOING an actual comparison after having discovered this website a couple years ago. I might have the habit of going through most every detail, and I usually don't like to make a "stupid dialogue" if I don't know what was said in the original. I also might reference Wikipedia a lot, which is interesting, since the Digimon Adventure page actually links to this site. XD

Side Note:
I watched this episode without the recap, but TV.com says that during the recap, dub Yolei refers to the control spire as the "dark tower." Not that that's a bad thing ... :D

Originally, Iori only says "It's my fault, it's my fault" and then the Narrator says "Earlier before ..." as the scene cuts to ... earlier before. In the dub, Cody's voice-over leads us to the flashback.

I don't like dub MegaSeadramon's voice. I don't see why they couldn't have left it in Japanese, although that's probably ‘cause he names his attacks in the dub, which he doesn't in the original.

Stupid Dialogue:
Silence
Davis: OK, this is it.
Cody: This is a strange place to find a digi-egg, Davis.
Davis: I know, but if the digivice says it's under an off-shore oil platform, then who am I to argue?

Initially, we don't know they're looking for a digimental until we see V-Mon talk.

Armadimon: I won't lose! (while racing Iori)
Armadillomon: Last one there is a rotten digi-egg.

They couldn't resist, could they? ^_^;

Also, Iori suspects it's his before Hawkmon suggests it could be Takeru or Hikari's.

Wormmon: What are we going to do, Ken-chan?
Digimon Kaiser: We're busy. We don't have time to play around with trivial matters.

Wormmon: What are you going to do to those kids, master?
Digimon Emperor: I don't have time for them, I'm taking over the world at noon and then I have a lunch date.

At least the bit about the Kaiser telling MegaSeadramon to do whatever he wants to them is kept.

Other Change:
MegaSeadramon: "Thunder Javelin" --> "Lightning Javelin. He doesn't say it in the original, but that's what the Digimon Analyzer says.

Stupid Dialogue:
The kids just scream.
TK: This is really gonna hike up oil prices!

He just grunts/pants
Davis: I've heard of earthquakes before, but never oceanquakes.

V-Mon: Daisuke, what's this? If it's an emergency button, I could push it.
Daisuke: Emergency button? That's it! Push it!

Veemon: Davis, look! I found an emergency shut-off valve!
Davis: I'd classify this as an emergency! So what are you waiting for? Hit the switch!

Iori doesn't mention a dream he had when he was little. In fact, he wasn't scared of the ocean in the original, at least nothing in the dialogue seemed to imply he was. He just blames himself for going there because it was a trap. Armadimon says he just happens to be the first one to arrive.

Hawkmon identifies the escape pod in both versions, but I don't like the way he says it in the dub "I do believe it says it's an emergency ejection vehicle." It's like he's trying to sound smart.

BTW, in the dub, when Davis agrees with Kari, he says it in kinda a weird voice. It's a little funny.

Hawkmon: If we make Iori-san feel special, then he won't want to, ne?
Hawkmon: To be honest, I can't tell which one of them is the youngest.

Side Note:
BTW, the straw-drawing thing is called "kujibiki" in the original, if anyone's interested.

V-Mon initially asked them not to make straws for the Digimon as in the dub, but he didn't think they were for drinking.

Stupid Dialogue:
Daisuke: Then, shall we decide it with Jan-Ken?(Rock-paper-scissors)
Takeru: Kujibiki is fine ...
Davis: That's right! One for all and all for me!
T.K.: I don't think that's how it goes ...

Iori: That's cheating!
Miyako: Well, cheating is cheating but ...
Cody: All the straws have red on them!
Yolei: The first one was so pretty I just couldn't stop coloring?

Speaking of which, did Miyako (or someone) just happen to have straws and a red marker on them? How convenient ...

Hikari ordering Takeru and Daisuke to force Iori into the pod is brilliant. XD

Did dub MegaSeadramon say "Yay"? ^_O

Silence
Cody: *thinking* OK, I can do this, if I just hold perfectly still ... I made it! Oh(boy?) the fresh air!

Originally, you don't hear Jou's voicemail until Iori's in the building. And it's not Jou's voice (with his rambling about his biology test), it's a precorded female voice that most people have on their cells.

Not an edit:
Iori's building with the "ODAIBA T.D.W. GARDEN" sign left intact. I'm not sure what the TDW means though.

Side Note:
Jou attends Shinagawa no Juku. Juku is cram school by the way, See Wikipedia.

The Grandpa's delivery about the "not telling a lie" speech is kinda weird in the dub.

Iori's mom's name is Fumiko, apparently. Also, she wanted Iori to do an errand by visiting someone named "Nobuzane-san."

On a side note, I don't really agree with his view about letting Iori say nothing. What if Iori was being abused or something?

Stupid Dialogue:
Iori: Arigatou Gozaimasu (Very polite way of saying "thank you")
Cody: Prune Juice sure makes you smart, grandpa!

Silence
Cody: I'll be back soon. Thanks grandpa.

Armadimon: Everyone, don't get so riled up.
Daisuke: I'm not
Armadimon: Really, gya?
Miyako: Really!
Armadimon: OK, then that's fine da'gya.

Armadillomon: There's no reason for you two to be fighting.
Davis: We're not!
Armadillomon: Or arguing.
Yolei: We're not.
Armadillomon: Good, well I'm glad that's settled.

After that, instead of suggesting they play checkers (with his shell as the board), Armadimon suggests they play shiritori, a word game. Wikipedia article on Shiritori.

By the way, the signs (in Japanese) for Jou's exam says it's "Kawada" which is the (apparent) area Takeru went to Elementary School in Adventure. Moving on ...

Cody: And someone might have to go to a hospital!

Iori: I'm really really sorry!
Jou: I said it's ok.

Cody: But since your dad's alright, why are you still running?
Joe: Oh, right.

Jou:I know, but before that I have to contact Koushirou
Joe: (to Cody) I realize that, but I gotta tell Izzy. (to himself/phone) For once in your life, get off the computer and answer the phone.

Side Note:
How come Takeru didn't even try to lift the digimental (like Hikari) and at least attempt to pick it up?

Armadimon's weird Bishounen armor evolution. 0_0

Initially, we didn't hear what Miyako whispered to Hikari about Armadimon's supposed evolution.

Stupid Dialogue:
Tailmon: They risk wearing out their bodies and mind; everyone's at their limit.
Gatomon: (About laughing as a way to cover up what's wrong)You know, sorta like I do in the catbox.

Side Note:
Why did the episode wait until Ikkakumon showed up to do the Digimon Analyzer for MegaSeadramon?

Ikkakumon mentions Zudomon in both versions, but in Japanese he says that he can't change to Zudomon, which will be important later on. Interesting that dub Ikkakumon mentions Tokyo though.

By the way, earlier in the dub, Joe tells Izzy to get "an old friend of theirs." Is he talking about Whamon in the dub? I DON'T think the Whamon here in the one from Adventure. While Jou later does mention that Koushirou got Tentomon to find the Whamon, the Whamon here DOES NOT TALK.

Like in adventure, the crest's name is "reliability" in the dub. Originally, it's "seijitsu" which means "faith" by most translations although Wolf Pack's sub says "Integrity."

Is it just me, or does dub Yolei's coughing sound more convincing than Japanese Miyako's?

Dub Davis is talking where Jou should be (before Jou takes Iori's arm; at least I think I heard Jou's voice).

Meh, the music playing where they're trying to convince Iori to take the digimental is sadder in the original.

I also like Jou in this scene. We didn't see much of him acting like a confident older brother in adventure. XD

Stupid Dialogue:
Uzumaku Seijitsu Sabumarimon = Whirling Faith Submarimon
Submarimon, Guardian of the Seas

Why is it with Armadillomon's armor evolutions, they don't incorporate his crest name?

Stupid Dialogue:
Daisuke: That's "faith" for you, cool!
Davis: So much for my idea of the porcupine.

Side Note:
Oxygen Homing --> Oxygen Torpedo
Submarine Attack
Aqua Vulcan --> Submarine Attack

OK, this is a bit confusing. The Digimon Analyzer says his attacks are Oxygen Homing and Submarine Attack. The dub Analzyzer just mentions Oxygen Torpedo. However, when Submarimon uses what is called "Aqua Vulcan" in the original, it is dubbed as Submarine Attack. This could be a mistake, I guess.

Mistranslation:
In the Japanese version, the text reads Submarimon's Digimon Analyzer as "Sabmarimon." The dub replaces the first "a" with a "u."

Stupid Dialogue:
Iori: We came to help.
Ikkakumon: Thanks. Alright! Double Attack!

Submarimon: Ikkakumon, are you alright?
Ikkakumon: Yeah, now let's take care of this worm together!

Music Edit (Side Note):
Where Break Up! is playing in the original, an insert song called "Strange" is used in the dub (I'm sure they've used it in previous 02 episodes). What's with all the dub 02 insert songs? It reminds me of the CCS dub.

Stupid Dialogue:
Silence
Ikkakumon: I'm up here, you overgrown garden snake!

Silence
Submarimon: Now for the dark spiral!

Silence
Ikkakumon: Nice job Submarimon!
Submarimon: Thanks, couldn't have done it without you!

MORE Silence
Yolei: They've been down there a long time.
TK: Don't worry, we can count on Cody!

Wormmon: (In response to having been beaten) Is that OK, Ken-chan?
Wormmon: Usually you would have smashed something by now, like me!

Side Note:
Grrr ... At the end of the episode, they had Submarimon talk too much. The only main part of their conversation is Submarimon telling Iori they're not going back yet, and then after the Tunnel, Submarimon comments on the sea being wide and then Iori say that it's peaceful and beautiful.

Music Edit (Side Note):
OK, I have no idea why no one else on Digimon Uncensored has brought this up, so I'll bring it up.

At the end when Submarimon is showing Iori the sea a VERY noticeable piece of music is playing. It is heard occasionally in Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, and in at least 3 of the movies connected to them (I don't think it plays in Hurricane Touchdown/Golden Digimentals).

It's Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" and it was NOT written for Digimon. Heck, it's about 80 years old. It's very nice, actually. Check it out on Wikipedia, which even mentions its use in Digimon (last time I checked, at least), referring to it as "main motif in connection to the Agumon released and his evolution": Wikipedia's article on Maurice Ravel's "Bolero".
