Duel Of Prairie Digimon
The Good, The Bad, and The Digi
Dejimon Bokujou No Kettou

They sure do talk quickly when they tell you what happened last episode. o.o It's a wonder how one can understand them.

At any rate, this episode was played as a special of sorts for some bizarre reason. O.o It's just a filler episode, but they made it special...

Michael Sorich, Nimoy and Buchholz for the writing team on this one.

The translation of the Japanese episode is kind of strange. I loosely translated is as "Duel Of Prairie Digimon" (trying to match the atmosphere they're in), but "bokujou" is closer to farm or grazing ground. Just letting you know.

Notice anything new? Yep, in italics above all stupid dialogue, you'll find translations of what was said in the Japanese version. :B This will be the standard from now on.

Not being fluent in Japanese yet, you shouldn't expect me to be able to translate everything. Not only that, but a lot of the time, the characters are speaking too softly for me to understand them. Other than that, I don't recommend that you quote me on some of these translations, since some are worded in a way that would be most appropriate to the situation, and others may be inaccurate. If I do get a translation wrong, don't be surprised.

Side Note:
Holy buckets, Birdramon's horrible bird-roar is back. >.< Guys, don't let her do it!

Up to this point, I haven't really talked about Upamon/Armadimon/Digmon/etc.'s dialect. In the original, he speaks in a thick Nagoya-ben, so he ends most (if not all) of his sentences with "dagya" (he kind of uses is like "desu"). Just some trivia.

Side Note:
Sora's tennis partner is named "Gwen."

Stupid Dialogue:
Tennis referee (I believe she was speaking, not "Gwen"): "What's wrong, Takenouchi-san?"
Sora: "Excuse me, I need to check something. I just need a short time-out."

Sora: "Great serve, Gwen! I'm feeling a little dizzy..."
Gwen: "WhatEVER!"

Jinnai help us all. Was that really necessary?

Ref: "Okay. Next up is Aritakusan."
Sora: "Why don't you two play?"

In the original, when the two girls are playing, you only hear the sounds of their tennis rackets.

Sora: "It's from Piyomon in the Digital World..."
Sora: "But how will I get to the DigiWorld?"

Digital World.

Tailmon was humming.
Gatomon: "That catnip rinse (?) makes my ears looks too stiff."

Tailmon: "Just a minute. (can't translate what she says next because one of the words is kind of weird)"
Gatomon: "Rome wasn't built in a day; looking beautiful takes time."

You're gonna need a lot of time.

Hikari: "Shapen up!"
Tailmon: "Okay, let's go!"

Kari: "So, beautiful, can you help me wash the dishes?"
Gatomon: "Eh, time's up!"

"Shapen up" as in stop stalling or quit playing around.

Gatomon: "It's a new look; it's quite the rage in Katmandu!"

Kari: "You know, most cats like mice, not mousse."

You don't put mice in your hair, and you don't eat mousse (except for chocolate mousse). That was a weird thing to say.

Side Note:
I must say that Takeru and Patamon's snot-sleep-bubbles look incredibly disturbing.

Censor/Scene Alteration:
The D-Terminal's message from Sora actually did say "S.O.S. from Piyomon," but in Japanese. The Japanese was replaced with English.

Stupid Dialogue:
Iori: "Upamon, don't do that!"
Upamon: "Why not?"

Upamon: "That's nothing to shake a stick at!"

silence
Cody: "Note to self: think of better way to sneak Upamon out of apartment!"

But Iori looks great when he's pregnant!

Iori: "Miyako, I'm sorry!"
Miyako: "Oh, Iori. You're in a hurry."

Yolei: "Cody, what did you eat? You must have gains 20 pounds!"
Cody: "It's Upamon."
Yolei: "YOU ATE UPAMON??"

XD I love this scene.

Iori: "I received a message from Takenouchi Sora."
Miyako: "From Sora?"

Yolei: "Your tummy's growling."

Okay, now it's not funny anymore.

silence
Cody: "The only way not to look suspicious is to sneak quietly!"

That's the only way to look suspicious.

silence
Yolei: "Wasn't my turn to watch them!"

Hikari: "Isn't this nice?"
Tailmon: "It is."
Kari: "That milkshake was really good, but seeing you drink through a straw was even better!"

O_o Okay.

Hikari: "Where should we go next?"
Tailmon: "Over there!"

Gatomon: "The fish market's calling my name! 'Gatomon...!'"

Miyako: "Maybe they're on a date!"
Daisuke: "Aaa?"
Miyako: "I was just joking!"

Yolei: "Maybe their batteries are dead!"
Davis: "Maybe T.K. decided to wash it in the bathtub!"

Well, it's nice that they're trying to show kids not to wash electronic things in the bathtub...

Daisuke just says that they should go.
Davis: "Well, now that we know where we need to get, let's get to getting there, got it?"

silence
Hawkmon: "I sense this place is a cultural desert..."
Veemon: "Did you say 'dessert???'"

XD That line really is cute.

silence
Armadillomon: "This sand-blastin' sure makes my shell looks real shiny!"

Ok, that was not cute. Go away.

Side Note:
Daisuke uses the goggles (during the sanstorm)! Yay!

Stupid Dialogue:
silence
Hawkmon: "Fear not, Yolei, for I will guard you from whatever danger that will be THRUST upon us!"
Yolei: "Instead of guarding my life, try finding us some cold water!"

silence
Veemon: "Last one there's a heela monster!"

O.o That was random...

Starmon: "Welcome to the best town in the Digital World!"
Starmon: "You're at the right place, you just sit where you are! You're sure to be happy here, so says the mon behind the star!"

o.o; *couldv'e sworn he was going say 'bar'*

Starmon: "I am this city's officer of justice, Starmon!"
Starmon: "Welcome, Digipilgrims, to the safest town west of Cirrus!"

o.O O... kay....

Starmon is offering them the "Welcome Milk."
Starmon: (talking about the milk and referring to it as "moo juice")

She and Miyako were actually saying that Piyomon couldn't be evil.
Sora: (talking about how Starmon can help them, being a "lawmon" and all)

Being a "lawmon," as you put it, he probably has better things to do.

Cut:
NOOOOO!!!! They cut out one of my favorite scenes!!!

In the original, Miyako says that Piyomon can't be evil, unless she has an Evil Ring on her.

(5 seconds) Well, Starmon is drinking milk while she says this. As soon as she mentions the Evil Ring, Starmon does the absolute funniest spit-take I have ever seen and he starts choking on his milk! XD It's hilarious because the milk goes straight from his mouth to the ceiling and he goes "Pyooooooou~!"

Stupid Dialogue:
Veemon: "... gutless, low-life, lacky of the emporer with jelly for a spine!"
Davis: "You could've told us! And what did we say about name-calling!

They were saying basically the same thing, but the dub's way of putting it is stupid.
Armadillomon: "Looks like the jury's still out on Starmon. Is he a bad apple or a good one?"
Cody: "People are like milk; they can go bad."

Starmon: "The Digimon Kaiser gave me a job to do..." (note: don't quote me on this, I may have misheard him)
Starmon: "You may think I'm lower than a snake's belly..."

Daisuke: "Where is the Digimon Kaiser now?"
Davis: "What's that Earth (?) reject doing now? Pulling wings off butterflies?"

Starmon: "Hehehe... he's perfecting his Evil Spiral."
Starmon: "'Earth reject!' I'll have to use that at the next company picnic..."

Starmon: "Aa?"
Starmon: "Well, don't that beat all?"

Starmon: "Meteor Score!"
Starmon: "Time for a weather report!"

Side Note:
Meteor Score is changed to 'Meteor Shower.'

Other than that, you guys miss out on Starmon's funny accent. :B He stretches out a lot of his syllables (like 'desu' and 'masu') and he sounds pretty goofy. Pegasus in Yuugiou does this, too. It's kind of a cartoony sort of way of speaking.

Stupid Dialogue:
Starmon laughing.
Davis: "I've heard of heavy showers, but that was too much!"

Oh, be quiet.

Starmon: "Here's the rules: No cookies in your cell, no loud music after eight, and no chucking oysters in the monk without an 'R'."

[UPDATE (1-10-03): Starmon is saying "no chucking oysters in the months without an 'R,'" which makes about a million times more sense than "monk without an 'R.'" Thanks to Michael for correcting me.]

Sora: "I'm sorry."
Piyomon: "But you heard me..." (as in she heard her cries for help)
Sora: "What happened?"

Sora: "Don't talk! What happened?"
Biyomon: "... You just said 'don't talk,' didn't you? I wish you'd make up your mind."
Sora: "'Kay, you can talk a little."

Cut:
(1 second) Starmon places his foot on Piyomon's head.

(2 seconds) Starmon perched atop a big staircase thing, laughing.

Stupid Dialogue:
Veemon: "What a thick wall!" (loosely)
Veemon: "I guess I used too much 'V' and not enough 'Headbutt!'"

Iori: "Armadimon?"
Armadimon: "What is it?"
Iori: "Armor shinka and drill through the wall."

Cody: "That wall's as hard as his head, and just as thick!"

Iori and Armadimon are talking and a horse is heard in the desert.
Yolei: "I'll call my dad! He delivers!"
Hawkmon: "But Yolei, we're in prison in the Digital World..."
Veemon: "That's right! If it's more than five miles, there's a delivery charge!"

XD! How come the other episodes aren't as funny as this? Or is that why it was aired as a special?

Miyako: "It's getting closer."
Yolei: "He [the horse] needs some new shoes!"

Side Note:
Revolmon's name is changed to Deputymon, and he's given a weird John Wayne-ish voice.

Other than that, a lot of what he says is stupid. So, unless it's relevant to the plot or some sort of humor OR it's just painfully, blindingly stupid, it won't be listed.

Revolmon: "Justice Bullet" = he has no attack name in the dub.

Cut:
(3 seconds) Revolmon runs to the cage and his guns clang again the bars. Replaced with a scene of Revolmon standing at the cage.

Stupid Dialogue:
He asks what they're doing in the cell
Deputymon: "From the looks on your faces, I feel like I've squashed your favorite hat!"

V-mon: "Do you have an Evil Ring on you?"
Veemon: "That's all that's in here! Just us! (a play on "justice")"

Revolmon: "You must be joking! The Digimon Kaiser doesn't control me!"
Deputymon: "Nobody controls me, not even myself!"

Side Note:
Ah, the famous Revolmon undressing scene.

In the dub, Deputymon just undresses as he wants. In the original, Miyako is telling him what to remove, although Daisuke was the one who told him to take off his pants. XD

I'm so glad they didn't cut this out. I love this scene.

Cut:
(2 seconds) Revolmon fires one of his guns and the cage opens.

Side Note:
The scene where Revolmon states that only the girls can come out actually wasn't changed from the original to the dub. Revolmon did want the girls to go to play cards. Whether it was on the grounds that boys cheat at cards, I couldn't hear, but his motive was to to show off for them and flirt.

Stupid Dialogue:
V-mon: "Please help us, too!"
Veemon: "Did I mention I don't even cheat at solitaire?" [Updated 09.01.2008: thanks to Ninetalesuk!]

Armadimon: "What kind of guy is this?"
Armadillomon: "Didn't ya ever hear: women, children, and Digimon first?"

Revolmon is a Digimon, too.

Iori: "He must be an eccentric."
Cody: "Couldn't you find it in your heart to let us all go just for the fun of it?"

He has to put up with Sora and Miyako. You should be glad you're getting rid of them!

Piyomon And Hawkmon: "What about us?"
Biyomon And Hawkmon: "But we're not boys!"

Erm, Hawkmon...?

Starmon was humming
Starmon: "Well, it's lunch time! Being a ruthless villain sure works up an appetite!"

Cut:
(5 seconds) You know that staircase thing Starmon was standing on earlier (it was cut out in the dub). Well, in the original, he's working on it before he comes in for lunch.

Side Note:
Starmon's obento is awesome. XD

Stupid Dialogue:
Starmon: "Itada kimasu!"
Starmon: "And, after lunch, a little nap, so I'll be my mean old self again!"

Iori: "Pretend my ropes are food!"
Amradimon: "Food?"

Cody: "Pretend these ropes are pasta and help youself to all you can eat!"
Armadillomon: "Mama mia!"

Miyako: (I can't hear her; judging by Sora's comment, I think she's asking about the game, or about Revolmon's shuffling)
Sora: "It's difficult. Watch carefully."

Yolei: "What a show off! After a couple of hands, let's try to escape!"
Sora: "Maybe we can make him fall sleep by talking him into playing Canasta!"

Sora: "If we don't win here, let's leave."
Miyako: "Okay."

Sora: "Do you know any ways of cheating when it comes to playing Old Maid?"
Yolei: "Follow me."

o_o What the hell? The dub conversation between Deputymon and Starmon is incredibly weird. In the original, Starmon shoots, Revolmon sees who it is, and they set off to duel. Nothing about "Georgy-porgy" or whatever.

Iori: "I'm good for now, please eat, Armadimon." (yeah, the first part is weird, but that's what he says. His exact words are "boku ga ii kara")
Cody: "Those ropes were just a high-fiber appetizer! Now, bon appetite!"

V-mon: "Gochisousama!"
Armadimon: "I'm okay now, Iori!"

Cody: "Just this once, it's okay to gulp your food!"

Miyako: "(I couldn't hear her)"
Sora: "Yeah."

Yolei: "I saw a movie like this once. The good guy won."
Sora: "Which one's good?"

In the original, this would have worked a lot better. At first glance, Starmon looked like a nice guy, whereas Revolmon looks like the bad guy. And Starmon still seems to be a lot nicer than Revolmon, especially since Revolmon cheats in the duel.

Yolei and Sora's side conversation is stupid.

Starmon: "I'll beat you!!! Meteor Score!"
Starmon "Let's just see how the fortune cookie crumbles!"

Cut:
(1 second) Did you notice the black mark on Starmon's face? The cut was Revolmon shooting, and that mark was left.

(7 seconds) Yet again, Saban makes you miss out on some pretty funny scenes. You know how one minute Starmon is standing there with his back facing Revolmon, and the next minute, he's gone. In the original, Revolmon started firing at Starmon with his attack, Justice Bullet, and Starmon's running around to get away from it.

(4 seconds) And after the cutback from Miyako and Sora, Revolmon does a triple-take with his attack, yelling "Justice! Justice! Justice!" and on the third one: Pop! He's run out of ammo. XD;;;;

Cut:
(a split second) WHAT THE HELL?? They cut out the staircase thing from when Starmon hit the Dark Tower!

I thought it was just to make it seem like Starmon had nothing better to do that walk around all day (other than work on the staircase) but they cut it entirely from the episode!

Are staircases evil or something?? Is it too sexual? Too religious? Speaking of religious, Iori's standing next to a crucifix and they didn't cut that out!

Seriously, why is this okay, when this isn't?

[Updated 13 January 2006: Ladies and non-ladies, we have a theory on this thanks to Ninetalesuk: open the screen shot, ignore the lack of quality and look at the top of the staircase where that frame is. In the middle, it looks like there's a noose hanging down, which strongly suggests that Starmon intended to hang them while he was under the influence of the Evil Ring.

Being that it's been years since I watched the original episodes, I can't tell you if this was referenced in the Japanese version or if there is in fact a noose up there. My guess would be that it is, because it makes a lot of sense that Saban would cut it out if that's the case.]

[Updated 06 January 2008: Two years later, we have a screen cap confirming that, yes, Starmon was robbed of his chance to be the most awesome character in the dub! It's a very nice screen shot, too; it's from one of WPP's subs. Thanks goes out to Josephine!]

Stupid Dialogue:
silence
Flamedramon: "Starmon, you're fired!"

silence
Armadillomon: "Look! A control spire!"

You can't see it yet, fool!

silence
Starmon: "I guess I just went plum loco. Hope there's no hard feelings, Biyomon."

Piyomon was originally thanking Sora and the Chosen Children.

Iori: "Sora, we need to return home soon!"
Cody: "I've got two pair! A pair of aces, and another pair of aces! Is that good?"

Starmon and Revolmon didn't want them to leave (I think)
Starmon: "That's it! We're switching to MY favorite card game: Go Fish!"
